The Angels are coming off another disappointing season during which the team finished third in the AL West with a losing record. The Angels have missed the playoffs for four straight seasons after three seasons in the postseason. Los Angeles also ramped up spending to franchise-high levels.
Big signings like Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton have not worked out with both players struggling when healthy. Those two combined are still slated to make $320 million over the course of their contracts in deals that may cripple the Angels financially moving forward. The team was also unable to keep Zack Greinke after trading shortstop Jean Segura and two pitching prospects for a half-season of his pitching.
The team will face big financial decisions soon, with the possibility that more expensive players like Howie Kendrick and Mark Trumbo could be moved as the Angels hope to stay under the luxury tax.
There have been rumors since 2012 that there is tension between Scoscia and Dipoto due to deep “philosophical differences”. Those rumors became more pronounced during the 2013 season with a notable rift stemming from the firing of long-time hitting coach Mickey hatcher. It has been speculated that the Angels could fire at least one of the two men to help resolve issues among the team’s management.
Scioscia refuted those reports earlier in the season. For now, it appears they may co-exist for one more season.
