Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara was named the 2013 ALCS MVP after closing out Game Six of the ALCS. The Red Sox won the deciding game 5-2, winning the series over the Detroit Tigers, four games to two.

Uehara played a key role in all four Red Sox victories. The reliever earned the first Red Sox win of the series in Game Two by tossing a scoreless top of the ninth. Boston trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but David Ortiz cracked a game-tying grand slam in the eighth, setting up a Red Sox walk-off in the ninth.
The closer earned saves in the other three Red Sox victories, including two one-run saves in Game Two and Game Five. Uehara pitched more than one inning during both of those games, recording a five-out save in Game Two and a four-out save in Game Five.
Uehara worked around a two-out single during Game Six, striking out Jose Iglesias to end the game and send Boston to its first World Series since 2007:
Overall, Uehara went 1-0 with three saves in three chances, striking out nine batters over six scoreless innings.
