Allen Craig injury: Cardinals 1B takes batting practice, works on baserunning

Craig hopes to make the Cardinals’ World Series roster, presumably to serve as the team’s designated hitter.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig took batting practice against Shelby Miller on Sunday afternoon, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Craig told reporters on Saturday that he expects to be ready for the World Series, and continues to rehab his injured left foot. He also worked on his baserunning, taking leads off first base, according to Scott Miller of CBS Sports.

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times had an interesting take, noting that Craig was running the bases at a similar level to Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier. An ankle injury bothered Ethier during the NLCS, but he still played center field.

If Craig is able to play in the World Series, he would likely serve as the Cardinals’ designated hitter. The first two games of the series will be at Fenway Park, played under AL rules. Craig has not played in a game since Sept. 4.

Update: Craig talked to Miller after the batting practice session, telling the reporter “I’m happy with where I’m at.” He doesn’t expect to spend time in the field, but plans to serve as the Cardinals designated hitter.
