Sporting News announces Comeback Player and Rookie of the Year awards

TSN awards have served as strong indicators for the BBWAA awards.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Sporting News kicked off their award week by announcing their Comeback Player and Rookie of the Year awards for the AL and the NL. Mariano Rivera and Francisco Liriano were named AL and NL Comeback Player of the Year, while Jose Fernandez and Wil Myers each earned a Rookie of the Year Award.

All four candidates had strong resumes for their award. Rivera bounced back after missing most of last season, saving 44 games with a 2.11 ERA for the Yankees. Liriano had struggled the past two seasons, but turned in an impressive campaign with the Pirates, going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA.

Fernandez led a deep NL rookie class, especially for starting pitchers. The Marlins right-hander went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA, leading all rookies with 187 strikeouts. Myers did not receive a promotion to the majors until June, but hit .293/.354/.478 with 13 homers and 50 RBI in 88 games.

The Sporting News polled 186 players to determine the winners. The awards have served as a strong indicator of the BBWAA awards that will be announced after the post-season; TSN AL and NL Pitchers of the Year have gone on to win the Cy Young Award every season since 2007.
