Miguel Cabrera injury: Tigers 3B may need offseason surgery to repair groin tear

Cabrera’s numerous injuries hampered the third baseman during the final month of the regular season and postseason.

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has a slight tear in his groin that may require offseason surgery, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told James Schmehl of MLive.

Cabrera dealt with a number of nagging injuries this year. He hurt his back in early July, then injured his left hip flexor later in the month. Cabrera suffered a strained lower abdomen in August before injuring his groin in September.

The third baseman kept playing through his injuries, earning the respect of his manager Jim Leyland. Leyland, who announced Monday that he is stepping down as Tigers manager, talked about Cabrera’s injuries with David Lennon of Newsday, telling the reporter:

“He obviously has been playing this entire series, and quite a while now really, in quite a bit of discomfort. It’s a shame because it has handicapped him in some ways, obviously. But my hat goes off to him to what he’s going through and going out there for us. He knows we need him in there and he’s really risen to the occasion in every way possible, in my opinion.”

Cabrera still turned in an impressive season despite the nagging health issues, batting .348/.442/.636 with 44 homers and 137 RBI. The injuries, however, did take a noticeable toll on Cabrera towards the end of the year. Cabrera only hit .278 with a .333 slugging percentage over the final month of the regular season before batting .262/.311/.405 during the postseason.
