Reds to hire Bryan Price as manager, per report

The Reds stayed internal with their new manager.

Frank Victores-US PRESSWIRE

The Cincinnati Reds will reportedly hire pitching coach Bryan Price as their new manager, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted on Monday night. However, the team has not confirmed or denied the report.

Price will take over for Dusty Baker, who was fired after the Reds lost in the National League Wild Card Game earlier this month. Price was hired by the Reds in 2009 and is the third current manager who has been both a pitching coach and a pitcher, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Baker was fired on Oct. 4 after six years with the Reds, where he finished with an overall record of 509-463. He guided the Reds to their first playoff appearance in 2010 since 1995 and later managed the Reds to two more appearances. But Cincinnati struggled under his tutelage in the playoffs and never advanced past the first round.

Price spent five years with the Angels and the Mariners as a pitcher, but never made it past Triple A. He got his coaching career off with the Mariners in 2001 and was named the USA Today Baseball Weekly's Pitching Coach of the Year after leading the staff to a ERA of 3.54. He left the Mariners in 2006 to join the Arizona Diamondbacks the following year. Price resigned after Bob Melvin left the Diamondbacks and spent one year with the Phillies before signing with the Reds.
