World Series 2013: Umpire crew announced

The MLB has announced the six men who will ump the Cardinals and Red Sox World Series.

The MLB has announced the umpire crew for the World Series, reports Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald. John Hirschbeck will act as crew chief and will serve alongside Dana DeMuth, Paul Emmel, Jim Joyce, Bill Miller and Mark Wegner.

The six men will act as the officials for all seven games (as necessary) for the upcoming series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox.

Hirschbeck will be umping the 17th playoff series of his nearly 30-year career, including his fourth World Series. He was crew chief of the 2010 World Series that saw the Giants beat the Rangers in five games. He was also the first president of the World Umpires Association.

Jim Joyce has been voted by players to be baseball's best umpire two years in a row in 2010 and 2011. However, he may be best known for a blown call that cost Armando Galarraga a perfect game on June 2, 2010. Joyce acted as first base umpire in that contest and admitted afterwards that he had made a mistake.

Emmel and Wegner are the only two men on the staff who have never been umpire in a World Series.

The World Series is set to kick off Wednesday with first pitched scheduled for 8:07 pm EST. The series will be broadcast nationally by FOX.
