Umpires overturn out call on Pete Kozma drop

An early horrendous call was overturned, and the Red Sox took advantage.

Umpires overruled an out call on the front half of a double play attempt after St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma dropped a throw from second baseman Matt Carpenter in the bottom of the first inning.

Dustin Pedroia, who reached on a single with one out in the inning, was initially ruled out by second base umpire Dana DeMuth. However, the crew, led by home plate umpire John Hirschbeck, got together and decided to change the call, resulting in a bases-loaded, one-out situation for the Red Sox.

Had Kozma made the catch, he might have had a chance to get the second out at first base with David Ortiz running. Instead, Mike Napoli stepped to the plate next and ripped a bases-clearing double to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright.

Jon Lester worked a scoreless first for Boston.
