The Boston Red Sox remain in control of Game 1 of the World Series, taking a 5-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals into the seventh inning on Wednesday.
World Series Game 1, Cardinals vs. Red Sox score update: Boston remains on top, 5-0
Boston’s bats have been quiet since the second inning, but Jon Lester has kept St. Louis off the board.
Boston's offense gave starting pitcher Jon Lester an early five-run cushion, and he has responded by tossing six shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six. Although, he had to work around significant traffic in the fourth and fifth innings.
St. Louis loaded the bases in the fourth before David Freese bounced into an inning-ending double play. Shane Robinson and Matt Carpenter reached base with singles in the fifth, but Lester induced a ground out off the bat of Jon Jay to escape the jam.
Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright was pulled after five innings and 95 pitches. The ace is in line for his second loss this postseason after surrendering five runs -- three earned -- on six hits and a walk. He struck out four.
John Axford struck out the side in relief of Wainwright in the bottom of the sixth.
