Clay Buchholz battling shoulder fatigue, hopes to start Game 4

If Buchholz starts Sunday for the Red Sox, he will be pitching on seven days rest.

When healthy Clay Buchholz is arguably the best starter on the Red Sox. But now, battling shoulder fatigue, Buchholz is slated to start Game 4 of the World Series against the Cardinals. If he is healthy enough, that is.

“That’s our goal right now is for me to be out there on Sunday,” Buchholz said, per Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. “I’m going to do everything I can to make that happen and be well enough to go out there and give the team a chance to win. If that’s me going out there at 90 percent, I’m going to go out at 90 percent.”

Buchholz was 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 16 starts during the regular season in 2013, but he missed three months with a neck strain. In three postseason starts he has a 5.40 ERA, including two starts against the Tigers in the ALCS in which he didn't last longer than 5⅔ innings. Buchholz was the Game 2 starter for the Red Sox in the ALCS and their Game 3 starter in the ALDS agains the Rays.

John Lackey is scheduled to start Game 2 for the Red Sox on Thursday night in Boston. Jake Peavy will start on Game 3 in St. Louis on Saturday.

After Wednesday night’s Game 1 victory, Red Sox manager John Farrell confirmed Buchholz was healthy enough to remain in the rotation.

“He’s going to pitch,” Farrell told reporters. “Likely that after we went through some work today, he did throw a little bit in the outfield, we’ll probably look to give him every extra day we can.”
