Giants won’t rule out Brian McCann, per report

The Giants already have Buster Posey behind the plate but could seek the services of a guy who was arguably the NL’s top offensive catcher prior to Posey’s arrival.

The San Francisco Giants have apparently not ruled out pursuing soon-to-be free-agent catcher Brian McCann this offseason, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

Despite the Giants' possession of Buster Posey, who is arguably the best offensive catcher in baseball, the team is said to be looking for a left-handed presence to put in their lineup. Brandon Belt, the team's incumbent first baseman, might already fit that description; he hit .289/.360/.481 in 2013. By comparison, McCann posted a .256/.336/.461 line.

McCann made $12 million in 2013 after playing out a six-year, $26.8 million contract that began in 2007. The 29-year-old backstop has hit .277/.350/.473 in more than 4,300 plate appearances for the Atlanta Braves. McCann has homered 20 or more times in six consecutive seasons and seven of the last eight.

He has not played a game at any position other than catcher in his nine-year MLB career.
