Indians will not offer Ubaldo Jimenez a multi-year extension

Cleveland does not have enough money to offer Jimenez a multi-year contract extension.

Jason Miller

There is "no chance" that the Cleveland Indians offer starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez a multi-year extension, reports Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Jimenez pitched well for the Indians last season, going 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA. He was dominant during the final half of the year, posting a 1.82 ERA with 100 strikeouts over 84 innings, helping the Indians win 92 games and earn the top AL Wild Card spot.

Cleveland, however, has no room in the budget to keep Jimenez. Tim Lincecum recently signed a 2-year, $35 million deal and Jimenez will be one of the top free agent starters available on the market.

The Indians may not extend Jimenez a qualifying offer, according to Hoynes. If Cleveland extends Jimenez a qualifying offer, and he declines the offer and signs somewhere else, the team will receive draft-pick compensation for the starter. Jimenez, however, could accept the qualifying offer, and Cleveland would have to pay him around $14 million in 2014.
