Tigers interview Tim Wallach for managerial job

The Dodgers third base coach is under contract with Los Angeles through 2014, and is the second reported managerial candidate to interview with Detroit.

The Tigers on Friday interviewed Tim Wallach for their vacant managerial job, making the Dodgers third base coach the second reported candidate to vie for Jim Leyland's old position, per Chris Iott of MLive.com.

The Tigers’ interest in Wallach was also reported by Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports and Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. Earlier Friday evening, Jonah Keri of ESPN’s Grantland cited a source describing the talks between Wallach and the Tigers as “escalating.

Wallach managed Triple-A Albuquerque in the Dodgers’ system in 2009-2010 before joining the Dodgers’ big league staff as third base coach in 2011. His 2014 option to return was exercised by the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Wallach played the first 13 seasons of his 17-year career with the Expos in Montreal, where current Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski was head of player development in 1987 and general manager from 1988-1991.

“I thought [the interview] went well,” Wallach told Iott. “It’s a very good ballclub and I know how Dave works. He was my general manager in Montreal.”

Leyland, who managed the Tigers for eight seasons and took the Tigers to three straight ALCS and one World Series in the last three seasons, retired on Monday. Detroit hitting coach Lloyd McClendon interviewed for the vacant manager position on Thursday.
