Rick Renteria, A.J. Hinch set for second interviews with Cubs

If Renteria is hired, then Brad Ausmus could replace him as the Padres’ bench coach.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs' search for a manager continues. Former Arizona Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch and current San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria will both get second interviews, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Former Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge is also in the mix.

Renteria, who managed Team Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, is rumored to be the favorite among candidates who have already been interviewed. If he were to take the job, then Brad Ausmus could be a possibility to step in as the Padres' new bench coach, according to Rosenthal. Ausmus, a former catcher who currently serves as a special assistant to the Padres, is also in the mix to replace the recently-retired Jim Leyland as the Detroit Tigers' manager. If Ausmus doesn't replace Renteria, then Rosenthal suggests that two other internal options could be first-base coach Dave Roberts and third-base coach Glenn Hoffman.

The Mariners, Cubs and Tigers are the only teams who are still without managers. The Cincinnati Reds hired Bryan Price on Tuesday and the Washington Nationals are expected to announce the hiring of Matt Williams after the World Series.
