The Boston Red Sox took the lead in the top of the sixth on a Jonny Gomes home-run and lead the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Gomes blasted a homer to left, breaking a 1-1 tie to give Boston a three-run lead.


Dustin Pedroia started the rally with a two-out single, bringing David Ortiz to the plate the face Lance Lynn. Lynn pitched around Ortiz, walking the slugger on four pitches. Mike Matheny then removed Lynn, bringing in Seth Maness to face Gomes.
Gomes, who was a late addition to the lineup after Shane Victorino was scratched with back tightness, jumped on a high sinker from Maness, blasting the pitch into the left field bullpen for a three-run homer:
Boston celebrated the home run in familiar style, messing with the outfielder’s beard after he crossed home plate:
Xander Bogaerts followed the homer with a single, but Maness escaped the inning with a Stephen Drew groundout. Gomes, however, had already given the Red Sox their first lead of the game.
