Red Sox vs. Cardinals, World Series Game 4 GIF recap

The Boston Red Sox evened the World Series at two games apiece with a 4-2 Game 4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Jonny Gomes delivered the clutch hit for the Red Sox, blasting a three-run homer off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness. Maness left a sinking fastball up in the strike zone, and Gomes punished his mistake:

Gomes was a late replacement for Shane Victorino, who John Farrell scratched from the batting order with back tightness. Boston was clearly happy to have the bearded outfielder in the lineup, and celebrated the three-run bomb in familiar style:

Boston scored their first run of the game on a Stephen Drew sacrifice fly, plating David Ortiz. The slugger hustled in from third base, barely beating out a throw from Matt Holliday:

The Cardinals scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Carpenter hit a one-out single up the middle, and Jacoby Ellsbury booted the ball, allowing Carpenter to slide into second base:

Carlos Beltran drove in Carpenter with a single up the middle, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.

The Red Sox committed another error later in the game. Xander Bogaerts made an impressive diving stop on a Yadier Molina groundball, but made a poor throw and missed Mike Napoli at first base:

Napoli, who came in the game as a defensive replacement for Ortiz, could have helped the rookie by coming off the bag earlier. The Cardinals could not take advantage of the mistake, stranding Molina at third base.

Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, the worst mistake of the night belonged to rookie second baseman Kolten Wong. The second baseman was picked off first base by Red Sox closer Koji Uehara to end the game, a critical baserunning error at the worst possible time:

Carlos Beltran was left standing in the batter’s box after Uehara erased Wong from the basepaths. The prolific postseason hitter could not hide his disappointment following the play:

It was that kind of night for the Cardinals and their fans. FOX cameras even caught Carpenter in a private moment during an interview with Mike Matheny; the second baseman can be clearly seen buckling up his pants:

Given how the game ended for St. Louis, we should probably be thankful that Carpenter wasn’t caught with his pants all the way down.
