2013 World Series: David Ross expected to start at C for Red Sox in Game 5

Ross has been the primary catcher for Game 5 starter Jon Lester.

H. Darr Beiser-USA TODAY Sports

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell expects that David Ross will start behind the plate in Game 5 of the World Series, reports Alex Speier of WEEI.

Ross has been the primary catcher for Jon Lester, who will start Game 5 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lester took the mound for Boston in Game 1, and Ross helped call 7 2/3 shutout innings for the starter.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia started Game 2 and Game 3 for Boston, making a critical throwing error in Game 3 that led to Allen Craig scoring the game-winning run on an obstruction call. Ross ended up starting Game 4, which the Red Sox would go on to win 4-2.

Farrell discussed Ross’ availability with Speier after Game 4, telling the reporter:

“[Ross is] ready to go [Monday], and likely will be back there as he’s paired up with Jon Lester. Good game caller, as he’s always been known for. Very good at framing pitches. And ran a very good game once again tonight.”

Neither catcher has hit well during the playoffs. Ross is batting .235/.278/.353 in the postseason, while Saltalamacchia has hit .188/.257/.219.
