Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a groin strain, Cabrera told Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed last week that Cabrera played through a Grade 2-3 groin strain throughout the postseason. At the time, Dombrowski stated that Cabrera might need surgery, which a specialist confirmed after evaluating the slugger.

Cabrera talked about his decision to play through the injury during the playoffs, telling Rojas:
“Those are decisions you have to make sometimes, if not it affects your future. If not, it could hurt your career, and that’s what I based my decision on. I consulted with the team and made this decision personally so I could keep playing with the team. I tried to [play hurt] to take advantage of the chance we had in the playoffs, because with so many good teams you never know when a chance like this will come along. It took me eight or nine years to get back in the playoffs and I wanted to be back there and help the team win.”
The third baseman was noticeably limited during the postseason, batting .262/.311/.405 while struggling in the field and on the basepaths.
Nagging injuries hampered Cabrera throughout the regular season, but the slugger still turned in an impressive campaign, batting .348/.442/.636 with 44 homers and 137 RBI. Cabrera received the Hank Aaron Award before Game 4 of the World Series, which is an award given to the most outstanding offensive performer in each league.
