2013 World Series Game 5, Red Sox vs. Cardinals score update: Boston leads, 1-0, after 2 innings

Adam Wainwright allowed a run in the first on a double to the red-hot David Ortiz but has notched six strikeouts through two innings. Is it too early to start mentioning Bob Gibson’s World Series-record 17-K performance in 1968?

David Ortiz hit an RBI double in the top of the first inning that gave the Boston Red Sox a 2-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals that stands through two innings in Game 5 of the World Series on Monday.

Dustin Pedroia yanked a double down the left field line with one out against Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright. Ortiz followed by smacking a grounder down the first base line past a diving Allen Craig, allowing Pedroia to score easily.

Wainwright bounced back to strike out the side, and did so without inducing a swinging strike in the inning. He recorded three more strikeouts -- all swinging -- in the second inning, including this whiff of David Ross:

Red Sox starter Jon Lester picked up a pair of punch-outs of his own while surrendering only one hit, a single to Carlos Beltran to lead off the second.
