World Series Game 6: Most expensive baseball tickets in history

The secondary market for tickets to Wednesday’s match-up at Fenway has reached record levels.

The secondary market for postseason ticket sales is always a lucrative business, but Game 6 of the World Series is establishing new highs for baseball.

Through early Tuesday afternoon, the average resale price for a single ticket to Wednesday’s potentially deciding game at Fenway Park was a record $1,024, and the remaining ticketing inventory sits at $2,186 per stub, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports via SeatGeek and TiqIQ.com.

The prices for Game 6 -- which vary from $900 standing-room-only tickets to $10,000-plus seats at field level -- dwarf the previous record for a baseball game, at least since SeatGeek started tracking the data in 2009. The previous record holder, Game 1 of 2010 World Series in San Francisco, had an average resale price of $940 a head.

In other words, the chances of finding a $6 ticket to Fenway for a World Series game is even more ludicrous now than it was a week ago.

If the Cardinals end up winning on Wednesday, forcing a Game 7, then it's likely that a new record will be set the following day. Though a contest Thursday is still "if necessary," the average ticket price for Game 7 already sits at $1,112. If the Red Sox win Wednesday night, let's hope that those Thursday tickets are refundable.
