Astros claim Raul Valdes, decline option on Humber

Houston made a couple of minor moves, removing one pitcher from the roster and claiming another.

USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros made two roster moves on Thursday, claiming pitcher Raul Valdes off waivers from the Phillies and declining pitcher Philip Humber's 2014 option, reports Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Valdes, 35, pitched in 17 games for the Phillies in 2013, including one start. He posted a 7.46 ERA and 1.429 WHIP. His 2012 season was much more successful: He appeared in 27 games and allowed just 10 runs over 31 innings. For his career, Valdes has a 4.94 ERA. He puts up big strikeout numbers, but tends to be very hittable.

The Astros will pay Humber a $50,000 buyout after outrighting him from the roster. His 2014 option was for $3 million, but Houston clearly did not believe he was worth that after he notched a 7.90 ERA over 17 games (seven of which were starts).

Humber, 30, also had a poor 2012 season with the White Sox, as well, and may not see much more than a minor league contract over the winter.
