The heated exchanges between Alex Rodriguez’s representation and Major League Baseball show no signs of slowing down as the two sides’ arbitration case continues.
Alex Rodriguez’s attorney responds to MLB
Joe Tacopina says that Rodriguez never bought any of the documents MLB believes he and the Sitrick and Company P.R. firm both have.
It was reported earlier Wednesday that the league was seeking evidence they believed Rodriguez had purchased in an effort to obstruct MLB’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic. Rodriguez’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, has fired back at those claims, according to Steven Marcus of Newsday (1, 2, 3)
“Alex has never bought any documents related to Biogenesis ... This is MLB’s desperate cry for help,” said Tacopina. “What happened to the overwhelming mountain of evidence against Alex? ... MLB doesn’t have what they said they have.”
Tacopina also expressed surprise that the MLB would attempt to make a move for the suspected evidence in the midst of the World Series.
Baseball’s attorneys later responded to Tacopina, saying, “We continue to be at a loss to explain how Mr. Tacopina can take the position that his client has done nothing wrong” and “First, it was Mr. Rodriguez did not do drugs. Now, it is he did not obstruct...Those statements are inaccurate.”
MLB claims that the evidence they believe Rodriguez is withholding is the same that were leaked to Yahoo! Sports implicating both Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun and Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli in the Biogenesis scandal.
Rodriguez was handed a 211-game suspension by MLB for his connection to Biogenesis. The Yankees third baseman is in the midst of appealing that punishment.
