World Series Game 6 notes: Doubront, Buchholz available; Wainwright not

The Red Sox and Cardinals are both going all-in with their pitching staffs on Wednesday. Other than Game 5 starters Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright, every pitcher on either roster is believed to be available to pitch out of the bullpen for Game 6, report Alex Speier of WEEI and Jesse Spector of Sporting News.

Manager John Farrell said that the southpaw Felix Doubront "won't be held back" Wednesday night, per Speier, which seems to imply that he'll go as long as necessary should John Lackey falter early. Doubront has allowed one run in 4⅔ innings of work this series, keeping the Cardinals offense at bay in the middle innings of Games 3 and 4.

Farrell also added that Clay Buchholz is available to pitch in relief, something he hasn't done since 2008. The right-hander has been battling fatigue in his throwing shoulder for at least the last week, but said that his arm felt better than expected after his start on Sunday.

Jake Peavy is scheduled to start Game 7 for the Sox "as of now," but Farrell said that Lester could be available depending on how things go in Game 6.

For the Cardinals, the "all-hands-on-deck" prerogative doesn't have quite as much weight. Guys like Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly have been used in relief with regularity this season, so seeing them in the 'pen shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

What would be unexpected is a Shelby Miller sighting. The 23-year-old right-hander was an anchor in the Cardinals rotation this year, but has thrown just one inning the entire postseason. It seems odd that Mike Matheny would call on a surely rusty Miller now, of all times, but stranger things have happened already in this series.
