Marlins exercise option on RHP Jacob Turner

Miami has picked up the first of Turner’s two contract options.

Marc Serota

The Miami Marlins have picked up right-hander Jacob Turner's $1 million contract option for the 2014 season, the team has announced.

Turner, still just 22, was acquired by Miami in the 2012 deadline deal that sent Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante to Detroit. While some might say the Marlins have been a bit overprotective in limiting Turner's innings over the last season-plus, he's pitched well when given the opportunity, amassing a 3.64 ERA over 27 starts.

The young right-hander signed a four-year, $5.5 million deal with the Tigers when they drafted him with the ninth overall pick back in 2009. While those four years have now passed, it also includes $1 million club options for 2014 and 2015, the former of which has been picked up.

As Turner is still a pre-arbitration player, the Marlins likely would have retained him for less money if the contract options weren’t in play. However, even misers like Jeffrey Loria are probably happy to retain a key part of their rotation for a measly million.

Because he didn’t crack the big leagues until late 2011, Turner won’t hit his first year of arbitration until after his second option season, which means that Miami has him under team control through at least 2018.
