Wil Myers on OF gaffe: Nobody called him off

Rays outfield Wil Myers put to rest speculation that he was called off from a fly ball that resulted in a ground rule double.

Tampa Bay Rays outfield Wil Myers told reporters that an outfield mix-up, which resulted in a ground-rule double and sparked a five-run inning for the Boston Red Sox, wasn't caused by anybody calling him off, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

Myers explained that he saw Desmond Jennings out of the corner of his eye and backed off, allowing David Ortiz's fly to drop and bounce over the outfield fence. Initial speculation was that someone, either in Red Sox bullpen or in stands, yelled "I got it" to distract Myers.

The ground rule double advanced Dustin Pedroia to third base before a Jonny Gomes double drove in two runs two at-bats later, tying the score at 2-2. The Red Sox scored three more runs in the inning, en route to a 12-2 victory.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled to be played on Friday at 5:37 p.m. ET. David Price is pitching for the Rays, and John Lackey will take the mound for the Red Sox.
