Jose Abreu rumors: Marlins make push for Cuban slugger

Abreu has been the cause of much speculation, with the Marlins heavily eyeing him to help a struggling offense.

The Miami Marlins are looking to make a serious push to acquire Cuban slugger Jose Dariel Abreu, reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Miami could use the hitting prowess for which Abreu is known. The Marlins scored by far the fewest runs in the major leagues in 2013 while also being the only team to not reach the 100 home run plateau and having an OPS nearly 50 points lower than the second-worst offense.

If the Marlins were to acquire Abreu, they would have to find a new spot for Logan Morrison if they want him to remain in the lineup. Abreu's defense limits him to just first base or designated hitter. The latter option is not a possibility for the Marlins while in the National League and Morrison currently occupies first base.

Abreu was declared a free agent by the MLB last week and is free to sign with any team. The Giants have been rumored to be the favorite to acquire Abreu's services. However, as McCovey Chronicles notes, the team has gone on record as saying they do not like his swing or defense.

In addition to the Marlins and Giants, Baseball America lists the White Sox, Nationals, Pirates, Red Sox and Rangers as possible destinations for Abreu.

It has been speculated that Abreu could potentially see a contract for as much as $60 million. That would be a record for a Cuban defector, topping those of fellow countrymen Aroldis Chapman, Yoenis Cespedes and Yasiel Puig.
