Cubs to interview Manny Acta

Acta has previous managing experience with the Indians and Nationals.

David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

The Chicago Cubs will interview former Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals skipper Manny Acta for their open manager position, sources confirmed to David Kaplan of CSN Chicago.

Acta is currently a baseball analyst for ESPN, and is considered very knowledgeable. He struggled in his two previous stints as a big-league manager, compiling a combined 372-518 record. Indians pitcher Chris Perez had harsh words for Acta after he was fired last season, telling Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com:

“Stuff wasn’t getting better with Manny as our manager. I didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. He’s very stubborn and he doesn’t really use input well, so I was getting frustrated. I thought, ‘If we have the same guy next year, it’s going to be the same stuff.’”

The Cubs have already met with former Arizona Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch, according to Kaplan. Hinch went 89-123 during his tenure, and is currently the vice president of scouting for the San Diego Padres. Padres bench coach Rick Renteria is also a candidate for the job.

Joe Girardi is the Cubs' preferred candidate for the position, but is under contract with the New York Yankees until Oct. 31 and has been offered a three-year contract extension. The Cubs are willing to top any offer the Yankees make, but continue to interview candidates in case Girardi returns to New York.
