Rockies exercise De La Rosa’s option, hope for extension

De La Rosa proved in 2013 that he could pitch effectively following Tommy John surgery.

The Colorado Rockies exercised their team option for 2014 on starting pitcher Jorge De La Rosa, according to the team's official Twitter page.

Colorado will pay De La Rosa $11 million to pitch for them next year, but are expected to discuss a contract extension with his representatives. A multi-year deal would likely come at a reduced annual salary.

Keeping De La Rosa long-term would help stabilize a rotation that has struggled to maintain consistency. Jhoulys Chacin and Juan Nicasio were the only other pitchers to make a full season's worth of starts for the Rockies in 2013.

De La Rosa, 32, had a 3.49 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 30 starts this season. However, his strikeouts have dropped since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2011. He had previously struck out eight-to-nine batters per nine innings, but since the procedure is closer to a 6.0 K/9.

De La Rosa has spent six years with Colorado, posting a 4.23 ERA overall in 124 appearances.
