Charlie Manuel could take advisory role with Phillies

Manuel was removed from his position as manager earlier in 2013, but could rejoin the team with a different job.

Despite being let go from his position as manager late in 2013, Charlie Manuel may return to the Philadelphia Phillies in a different capacity, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and Manuel have had ongoing discussions about the latter possibly taking on a role as an advisor. The two sides talked as recently as this week and Amaro says that the team has made an offer. They are now waiting to hear back from Manuel.

“Charlie is in a position right now where he doesn’t have to do anything,” Amaro told the Inquirer. “But I think he’s always been pretty fond of the Phillies and the feeling is mutual. Hopefully we can bring him back. If not, that will certainly be his choice.”

Manuel was fired as manager Aug. 16, with Ryne Sandberg taking over. He had been at the helm of the team for nine years and became the winningest manager in club history with a 780-636 record. The Phillies kept him on board long enough for Manuel to win his 1000th game as a manager in the MLB.
