Rockies rumors: Colorado, manager Walt Weiss nearing contract extension

The Rockies are expected to reach a multi-year deal with their manager by the end of next week.

USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rockies are closing in on a multi-year contract extension for rookie manager Walt Weiss, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Details on the new contract are in short supply at the moment, but owner Dick Monfort expects the deal to be finalized by the end of next week.

Weiss signed on as the Rockies skipper last November after Jim Tracy stepped away from the job. The 49-year-old led the Rockies to a 74-88 record in his inaugural campaign, a 10-win improvement from the 2012 season.

The team faded in the second half after jumping out to a surprising start, but fared pretty well considering Weiss’ managing résumé didn’t extend beyond high-school ball before this season.

For his part, Weiss seemed to enjoy the job more as the season progressed:

”There’s an expectation around here now, I can sense. Guys are expected to compete at a certain way and at a certain level...

“I have really enjoyed the way the guys have fought down the stretch, especially as the season got away from us and we weren’t in the race. Usually the true colors show then.”

While the team finished in the NL West cellar this year for the second straight season, the squad did show some promise of a brighter future. The team got strong performances from a pair of young rotation arms -- Jhoulys Chacin and Tyler Chatwood -- and other young guys like Nolan Arenado and D.J. LeMahieu gave glimpses of their potential.
