Cubs to interview Rick Renteria for manager, per report

He might not be the best-known Renteria to ever be associated with the sport, but Rick has plenty of coaching and managing experience, something the Cubs have apparently recognized.

The Chicago Cubs will interview San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria next week for their vacant managerial position, according to ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers.

For more on the Cubs' search for a new skipper, head over to Bleed Cubbie Blue.

Renteria has served as Bud Black's right-hand man since the start of the 2011 season, during which time the Padres have been 40 games under .500. The Cubs also recently talked with Padres executive A.J. Hinch and former Cleveland Indians skipper Manny Acta regarding the position, per Rogers.

Renteria spent five seasons as a player in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins. The California native managed in the Marlins and Padres organizations for seven seasons before earning his first MLB coaching gig in 2008.

Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. could soon surface as a candidate, adds Rogers, who says other names could also be added to the list after Joe Girardi decided to stay with the New York Yankees on a four-year deal on Wednesday.
