Diamondbacks contacted former Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan

The former Cardinals pitching coach is reportedly interested in returning to baseball.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have approached former St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan about a potential return to baseball, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Duncan has been out of baseball since 2011 to help his wife, Jeanine, battle cancer. She passed away in June 2013. Duncan, however, is open to a return to baseball and has fielded a number of calls for a variety of roles, according to Goold.

The Diamondbacks kept manager Kirk Gibson, but fired most of his coaching staff, including pitching coach Charles Nagy, after two consecutive 81-81 seasons. Arizona had a 3.92 ERA last season, sixth-worst in the National League.

Duncan receives a lot of credit for helping the Cardinals find serviceable major-league pitching off the scrap heap, helping pitchers improve upon or resurrect their careers. Steve Sommer of Fangraphs found evidence to support the claim, noticing that most starting pitchers improved their groundball rate while pitching for Duncan.
