Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez was named the National League Rookie of the Year on Monday. Fernandez won the vote by receiving 142 points, including 26 out of 30 first-place votes. He edged out runner-up Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers (95 points, four first-place votes) and third-place finisher Shelby Miller of the St. Louis Cardinals (12 points, one second-place vote).

Fernandez was simply brilliant in his first major league season. He went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 28 starts, finishing second behind Clayton Kershaw for the NL ERA title. He also struck out 187 batters in 172⅔ innings, issued only 58 walks, and allowed only 10 home runs. His performance led Marc Normandin to ask whether Fernandez was the greatest rookie pitcher ever.

The end of the right-hander's season also included some excitement. On Sept. 6, he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Washington Nationals, and in his next start on Sept. 11 he hit his first home run against the Atlanta Braves. However, his antics after hitting that blast led to a highly-publicized kerfuffle with catcher Brain McCann and the Braves team.

Fernandez is the fourth Marlin to win the Rookie of the Year award. Pitcher Dontrelle Willis won in 2003, shortstop Hanley Ramirez received the honor in 2006, and outfielder Chris Coghlan got it in 2009.

While the numbers are telling, Fernandez's greatness is best enjoyed in visual form. Here he is striking out Clint Barmes:
