Joe Nathan rumors: Free agent closer, Tigers have mutual interest

The Tigers are moving on from the short-lived Joaquin Benoit era in the back-end of their bullpen and are apparently intrigued in bringing in an older but more experienced option.

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers and free-agent reliever Joe Nathan have mutual interest in each other, according to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi.

More at Bless You Boys: Nathan could be great fit for Tigers

The Tigers are searching for a closer after losing Joaquin Benoit to free agency. Although the two pitchers posted similar peripherals in 2013, Nathan presents a more experienced option for that role and has the Tigers "high on his wish list," per Morosi.

Nathan made $7 million in 2013 for the Texas Rangers in the second half of a two-year, $14 million deal. After a solid season during which he saved 43 games, posted a 1.39 ERA and struck out 10.2 batters per nine innings, Nathan chose to void his $9 million option for 2014 and declare free agency, earning $750,000 in buyout money in the process.
