Phillies still searching for pitching coach

Ruben Amaro can’t get anyone to take his vacant pitching coach job. It seems like there should be worse situations than having Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels at the top of your rotation.

The Philadelphia Phillies are still looking for a pitching coach after the team made offers to "a couple of" candidates who declined to take the position, general manager Ruben Amaro told CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury.

The Phillies were recently turned down by Roger McDowell, who will remain in his position with the Braves, and failed to land Bryan Price, who was named the Reds' new manager on Oct. 22. Philadelphia has talked to six others, including in-house candidates Ray Burriss and Rod Nichols.

Former big-league pitching coach and current Mariners special assistant Pete Vuckovich, Pirates special assistant Jim Benedict, Rays minor-league pitching coach Neal Allen and Marlins coach Reid Cornelius have also drawn the interest of the Phillies, but none of those names have materialized.

Philadelphia made the decision not to bring back Rich Dubee, who served as the team’s pitching coach for nine years, at the end of the regular season.
