Clint Hurdle, Terry Francona win 2013 Manager of the Year awards

The skippers of the Bucs and the Tribe take home 2013’s honors.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle and Indians manager Terry Francona have been named the BBWAA's 2013 Managers of the Year.

Hurdle earned his award by leading the Pirates to their first winning season and playoff appearance in more than two decades. After back-to-back late-season collapses in 2011 and 2012, the Bucs were able to hold things together in 2013, earning a wild card berth by winning 94 games in the regular season. Pittsburgh eventually fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in the division series.

Francona wins his first manager of the year award in his inaugural year at the helm in Cleveland. The former Red Sox skipper returned to the dugout in 2013 with the hopes of reversing the organization's recent fortunes, and did just that. Francona led Cleveland to a 92-win season, earning the team a playoff berth (the wild card game, at least) for the first time since 2007.

John Farrell (Red Sox) and Bob Melvin (A's) were the other two finalists for the AL award, while Don Mattingly (Dodgers) and Fredi Gonzalez (Braves) were finalists for the NL.
