National League MVP 2013: Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen wins award

McCutchen snapped another one of the Pirates’ 21-year skids by taking home the NL MVP award on Thursday.

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been named the 2013 National League Most Valuable Player, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced on Thursday.

McCutchen received 28 of 30 first-place votes to beat out Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. The 27-year-old native of Florida is the Pirates' seventh MVP winner and first since Barry Bonds in 1992.

The other two first-place votes went to Molina, given out by Cardinals writers Derrick Goold and Rick Hummel, both of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

McCutchen hit .317/.404/.508 with 21 home runs and 27 stolen bases for the Pirates, who shook off consecutive late-season collapses to finally finish with their first winning record and postseason berth since 1992. McCutchen was named to the NL All-Star squad for the third straight season and captured his second consecutive Silver Slugger award.

The Pirates finished the season with a 94-68 record and defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card play-in game before falling in five games to the eventual NL champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the NL Division Series.
