Phillies interested in Angels’ outfielder Peter Bourjos

This is not the first time that Philadelphia has been linked to the Angels’ centerfielder.

USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in trading for Los Angeles Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. This is not the first time that the team has kicked the tires on Bourjos; they went after him last winter as well, and have had their eye on him for years.

The Phillies' interest in Bourjos stems from their desire to add defense, depth and injury insurance to their outfield. Their current depth chart currently consists of Dominic Brown in left, Ben Revere in center, and the newly-signed Marlon Byrd in right. They also have Darin Ruf in the mix; Ruf batted .247/.348/.458 with 14 home runs in 293 plate appearances last year. However, Brown has been the subject of trade rumors this month and Ruf is best cast defensively as a first baseman, so there is still room to add another body to the outfield.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, it is unclear what they might have to offer Los Angeles in a trade right now. The Angels’ lineup is mostly full, and their biggest need is pitching. However, Philadelphia does not have pitchers to spare, and the team’s farm system is light on pitching prospects. Bourjos played only 55 games for the Angels last year due to injuries to his hamstring and wrist; he batted .274/.333/.377 in 196 plate appearances before undergoing season-ending surgery on the wrist in early September. He is best known for his glove, and is among the top defensive outfielders in baseball.
