Rays could use 4-man rotation at DH in 2014

The team has four outfielders and could keep all of them in the lineup by giving turns at designated hitter.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman said at the General Manager meetings that the team may utilize a four-man rotation at the designated hitter spot in the lineup in 2014, reports Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune.

Matt Joyce and David DeJesus could fill the left-handed side of the rotation, while Wil Myers and Desmond Jennings taking swings as right handers. All four players may be in the lineup together fairly often. Myers and Jennings are penciled into two of the starting outfield spots with DeJesus and Joyce battling it out for the third. By having the four take turns at DH, it would allow the Rays to keep them rested while keeping their bats in the lineup.

Using this strategy would also allow the Rays to focus their efforts on filling other positions of need this offseason. The Rays started ten players at DH over the course of 2013 with Luke Scott leading the way with 61 games played at the position. Scott is a free agent this offseason.
