Dioner Navarro free agency: Red Sox interested in catcher

The Red Sox are looking in nearly every direction as they search for a catcher.

Brian Kersey

The Boston Red Sox have some interest in free agent catcher Dioner Navarro, reports Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.

Navarro, 29, spent 2013 with the Cubs. He had a career year at the plate in Chicago, hitting .300/.365/.492 with a career-high 13 home runs over 89 games. Over a 10-year career, he has a career 684 OPS. His defense at catcher has received mixed reviews in recent years.

The Red Sox lost one option to fill their vacant starting backstop role when Carlos Ruiz re-signed with the Phillies for three years on Monday. Ruiz had been one of Boston's targets at the position this offseason.

Boston's starting catcher the last three seasons, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, is a free agent this offseason, leaving a hole in the Red Sox lineup. The team has shown at least some interest in re-signing him, but seems inclined to explore other options at the position, first. The Red Sox have looked into Brian McCann and are still a candidate to sign him, though they are turned off by his current asking price.
