Twins prospect Eddie Rosario facing 50-game drug suspension, per report

The young second baseman will miss the two months of 2014, putting his rise through the farm system on hold.

Minnesota Twins prospect Eddie Rosario has been handed a 50-game suspension for violating minor league baseball's drug policy, reports La Velle E. Neal III of the Minnesota Star-Tribune. News of the suspension was originally reported by Sport Live PR.

An MLB spokesperson told Neal that nothing official will be announced Tuesday because of an unknown issue that needs to be resolved, but the suspension appears to be a done deal.

According to the original report, word of the suspension emerged when Rosario contacted his winter ball team to inform them of it. The 22-year-old infielder, recently ranked the No. 7 prospect in the Twins' deep farm system, told the club that his failed drug test was the result of pills taken while recovering from an arm injury.

Rosario hit .302/.350/.460 with 10 home runs in 122 games between Single-A and Double-A this past season, putting him on the fast track to big-league club. Originally drafted as a center fielder, Rosario moved to the keystone full-time in 2013. He was likely to take over at second in Triple-A at the start of next season, but will now have to wait 50 games before getting things going.
