Giants rumors: San Francisco in talks with Ryan Vogelsong

If the Giants can work out a new deal with Vogelsong, they’ll be done shopping for starting pitchers.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants are currentlyin discussions with free agent starter Ryan Vogelsong and will put an end to their search for starting pitching if they can bring back the right-hander on a new deal, Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area reports.

The Giants also reportedly have “other feelers” out for back-of-the-rotation types like Josh Johnson, so Vogelsong’s return to the Bay Area for a fourth season is not guaranteed at this point.

The 36-year-old Vogelsong resurrected his career when he latched on with the Giants three years ago. The veteran had great success in his first two seasons with the club--posting a 3.05 ERA in 369⅓ innings between 2011-2012--but struggled mightily during the 2013 season.

Vogelsong made six terrible starts to begin 2013, spent three months on the DL with a broken finger, then returned in August for 10 more mostly-awful outings. He finished the year with a 5.73 ERA over 19 starts, numbers that bear much more resemblance to the pitcher who went to Japan in 2007 than the All-Star who came back.

San Francisco has already made two moves this offseason to solidify its rotation for 2014, inking Tim Lincecum and Tim Hudson to multi-year deals. With Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner already on board, the Giants now have four starters in place for next season.
