The Detroit Tigers will hire San Diego Padres front office assistant and former Gold Glove-winning catcher Brad Ausmus to replace Jim Leyland as the team's manager, as first reported by Adam Spolane of 610 KILT and confirmed by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Ausmus joins a number of recent managerial hires who have had no professional managing experience at the time of their hire. He has been compared to St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, another former Gold Glove-winning catcher, who reached the World Series in his second year as manager.

The former catcher did manage Team Israel in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, and has been considered a sharp baseball mind since his playing days. Ausmus spent three years of his 13-year career in Detroit, batting .266/.354/.382 with the Tigers.

Ausmus also interviewed for the Washington Nationals manager position, which went to Matt Williams, and the Cubs manager job, which has not been filled.

The Tigers also interviewed hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach and Padres bench coach Rick Renteria for the position.
