The chances of that happening likely improved significantly following the Tigers' trade of Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Cabrera is set to become a free agent after the 2015 season, and the Tigers would have been hard-pressed to give him a high-dollar contract extension while also on the hook for Fielder's contract, which pays $24 million per season through 2020. However, after unloading Fielder to the Rangers in exchange for Ian Kinsler, the Tigers find themselves in a much better position to retain their biggest star.
Cabrera dealt with injuries down the stretch of the 2013 season, but still managed to hit .348/.442/.636 with 44 home runs. The injuries were due in part to the large number of innings he logged at third base, an issue that could be somewhat mitigated if the Tigers decide to move Cabrera to first base on a full-time basis now that Fielder’s spot has been vacated.
