Fish Stripes takes a look at rumors of the Marlins having an interest in Yuniesky Betancourt The team is looking for a veteran starter to put in the rotation, provided they are fairly inexpensive. Hughes could fit that role after a 2013 season in which he posted a 5.19 ERA and 1.46 WHIP while making 29 starts and one relief appearance for the Yankees.
That marked Hughes’ second ERA over 5.00 in three seasons. His best year came in 2010 when he was named an All-Star with a 4.19 ERA over 31 appearances. The right hander was once named the No. 4 prospect in the nation by Baseball America but has not been able to break out into anything more than a fourth or fifth starter.
Navarro is an offense-first catcher who could complement defensive-minded Jeff Mathis for the Marlins. He is coming off the best year of his career. In 89 games with the Cubs, he hit .300/.365/.492 with a career-high 13 home runs.
Miami has already called Hughes to inquire about what he is looking for in a deal. Both players figure to have a number of suitors in the offseason.
