Angels free agent rumors: L.A. interested in Bronson Arroyo, Bartolo Colon

The Angels are looking for rotation help after losing Jason Vargas to the Royals in free agency.

The Los Angeles Angels have interest in free agent starting pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Bartolo Colon, reports Jim Bowden of ESPN. However, the team is not close to signing any free agent at this time.

Despite no deal being close, the Angels' interest in the two players gives an indication of where they'll look to improve the team going into 2014. They may not be interested in any of the higher-end starters like Ervin Santana or Matt Garza. However, after the loss of Jason Vargas in free agency, the team is looking at the mid-tier starters to fill the hole in its rotation.

Arroyo is seeking a three-year deal. He has been as steady as they come in the Reds rotation the last few years. He's posted an ERA between 3.74-3.88 four of the past five years and has pitched at least 199 innings each of the last nine seasons.

Colon also is hoping to get a multi-year contract and, despite being 40 years old, may get it after two excellent seasons with the Athletics. In 2013, he made 30 starts and posted a 2.65 ERA, the best mark of his career. He made $5 million for the last two years in Oakland.

The Angels are also still rumored to be interested in trading Mark Trumbo, Erick Aybar or Howie Kendrick in return for young starting pitching.
