Matt Wieters, Chris Davis await Orioles extension offers

Both players are set to enter arbitration for the second time and are under team control through the 2015 season. However, both are also due for huge raises and are Scott Boras clients, meaning an extension before free agency may be a difficult proposition.

Boras has been known to drive a hard bargain and generally wants his clients to test the waters on the open market rather than sign a new contract early. He often gets the best possible deal for his clients, and has a reputation as being somewhat hard to work with when negotiating a deal.

There have been no such talks about Chris Davis, who finished third in AL MVP voting in 2013. He hit 53 home runs while posting a 1004 OPS last year after first breaking out as a star in 2012. Baltimore needs him to continue being the key cog in their top-flight offense the next two years, even if he is expected to receive a significant raise in arbitration.

For now, the Orioles are focused on fielding the best team they can in 2014, when they hope to once again make the postseason. That means general manager Dan Duquette has not had time to engage in any extension talks. They could begin later in the offseason or in spring training, or the Orioles could possibly wait until after next season before broaching the topic further.
