Dodgers, Hanley Ramirez negotiating contract extension, per report

Ramirez, who turns 30 in December, hit .345/.402/.638 with 20 home runs in 86 games in 2013. He has one season left on his current deal.

Shortstop Hanley Ramirez said in an interview on Friday that he is discussing a contract extension with the Dodgers, per Dionisio Soldevia of ESPN Deportes.

“I can not talk about money or years, but we are negotiating and something could happen this winter,” Ramirez told Soldevia.

Ramirez played just 86 games in 2013, but was productive when on the field. The shortstop hit .345/.402/.638 with 20 home runs, 25 doubles, 62 runs, 57 RBI and 10 stolen bases, and despite missing nearly half the season, finished eighth in National League MVP voting.

Ramirez has one more season left on his contract, and is due $16 million in 2014. He turns 30 in December. Ramirez is eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.

After helping the Dominican Republic to the 2013 World Baseball Classic title, Ramirez dislocated his right thumb in the finale and missed the first 24 games of the season. He later missed 28 games with a strained left hamstring and was sidelined with both a jammed right shoulder and nerve irritation in his lower back.

Ramirez also suffered two broken ribs in Game 1 of the NLCS when he was hit by a fastball from Cardinals hurler Joe Kelly and hit just .133/.316/.133 in the NLCS. In the NLDS against the Braves, he hit .500/.556/1.063, tying a Dodgers franchise record with six extra-base hits in a playoff series.

“I’m still not 100 percent, because I need four to six weeks,” Ramirez said to Soldevia.

Ramirez added that his offseason rehab is going well.
