MLB trade rumors: Cardinals may shop Lance Lynn or Shelby Miller for a shortstop

The Cardinals may trade from a position of strength to address their hole at shortstop.

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals may shop starting pitchers Lance Lynn and Shelby Miller in search of an improvement at shortstop, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Cardinals have enviable pitching depth, including a number of young pitchers with electric stuff. Adam Wainwright will head the 2014 rotation, with Joe Kelly and Michael Wacha likely earning spots after strong postseason performances. Carlos Martinez will warrant a look next season, and Trevor Rosenthal may move back into the rotation after spending the last year in the bullpen.

St. Louis is also expected to have Jaime Garcia return at some point next season, making Miller or Lynn expendable in a trade. Miller was a Rookie of the Year candidate in 2013, going 15-9 with a 3.06 ERA. Lynn made 33 starts for the Cardinals, going 15-10 with a 3.97 ERA.

Pete Kozma struggled as the Cardinals primary shortstop, batting .217/.275/.273. His struggles carried over into the postseason, only collecting five hits in 41 plate appearances.
