MLB manager roundup: Lloyd McClendon, Chip Hale to receive second interviews with Mariners

Taking a look at the latest MLB news involving teams that will employ new managers in 2014.

USA TODAY Sports

Since the end of the World Series, teams who headed into the offseason with openings at manager have begun to fill the important position. Not every team has hired a new skipper yet, but will likely want to make a decision before the general manager meetings on Nov. 11. Let’s take a look at the latest MLB news involving teams that will employ new managers in 2014:

Hale, McClendon to receive second interviews with M’s

Oakland Athletics bench coach Chip Hale will receive a second interview for the Mariners' manager position, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Hale served as a minor-league manager in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization before joining Bob Melvin's staff at the major-league level in 2006. The New York Mets hired Hale as the team's third base coach in 2009, and then Melvin hired Hale to serve as the bench coach in Oakland in 2011.

Detroit Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon also went to Seattle for a second interview, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com.

McClendon has previous managing experience, serving as the Pittsburgh Pirates skipper from 2001-05. He interviewed for the Tigers' manager job, which ended up going to Brad Ausmus.

Cubs expected to name manager this week

The Chicago Cubs will likely name their next manager sometime this week, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.

Chicago is expected to interview Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo for the position early in the week. Cubs president Theo Epstein is familiar with Lovullo from his time in Boston; he hired Lovullo to manage the Red Sox's Triple-A team in 2010.

The Cubs have previously interviewed Rick Renteria, A.J. Hinch, Dave Martinez, Eric Wedge and Manny Acta.

Ausmus signs a three-year deal

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus signed a three-year contract with a club option for a fourth year, writes Matt Snyder of CBS Sports.

Ausmus and general manager Dave Dombrowski held a press conference introducing the new manager on Sunday. The pair fielded a number of questions regarding the former catcher’s lack of experience, but Ausmus believes that his recent playing experience could be an advantage, stating:

“I was just playing the game three years ago. I’m not that far removed from the players. I have a pretty good understanding of how the locker room dynamic is.”
